VANCE

“That was... an experience,” Delta says from her spot on the balcony. She lounges in one of the two chairs overlooking the ocean, her heels forgotten as she moves her toes to the evening breeze. The crashing of the waves works as a lullaby as I ditch my tie and suit and open the shirt.

“If you meant a nightmare, then I agree.” I offer her a glass full of golden, bubbly liquid, then leave the bottle next to us as I take the second chair.

Delta chuckles, a ringing sound that does weird shit to my stomach. “I expected worse.”

“How? My father literally called you out for not being skinny. As if I’d ever date a girl who doesn’t eat.”

She arches an eyebrow but says nothing. Delta watches me a moment longer, those hypnotizing eyes on me. I don’t know what it is, but it’s impossible to move away from her presence. She could have left already, but I insisted my parents could still come back. They wouldn’t, but the white lie slipped past my lips naturally. It worries me that I want her to stay longer. That I want to spend more time with her.

“Oh,” she murmurs, then puts the glass down to fumble with something in her hand. “I should give you the ring back.”

“No, keep it.”

She cocks her head. “Why? Is it a fake rock?” And she stretches her arm to look at it under the dim light.

“No.” I would never give her a fake rock, even when I know this relationship is a lie. “Do you like it? If you like it, you can keep it.”

“Mm, it’s very pretty. Maybe a bit too big for my fingers, but it’s pretty.”

“So you’d prefer a small rock?”

“Yeah...” She snaps her head to gape at me. “Why?”

I shrug because I shouldn’t be thinking of giving her another ring. “Curiosity. Never bought a ring, so I wanted to know if I got it right.” And I gulp deeply from the champagne. What in the world is this woman doing to me?

I’ve never wanted relationships, but Delta bespelled me. With her smiles and how easily she takes life. How she defies and challenges me at every turn, never caring about my status or my money. She’s different from every other person in the world, unique, and I can’t deny how hard I desire her.

“How did you do it, anyway?” she asks, half-turning on the chair to look at me. “Find out my ring size? Was it a guess?”

I smile at her. “No. I stole a ring of yours when I gave you the computer.”

Her jaw drops in mock offense. “A thief! I can’t believe I thought I had lost the ring when you’re the one who stole it from me.”

I shrug, but she shoots to her feet, gathering the heels from the floor. Cocking my head, I watch her marching into the house, hips swaying. “Where are you going?” I call out before standing up, too.

“How could I stay in the same place as a thief?” she says, but I hear the laughter in her voice.
